Waste Treatment and Recycling

  • Liquid waste process design and build
  • Process bottlenecks
  • Waste process technical evaluations
  • Oil recovery processes
  • Recycling optimization audits

Despite the obligations and desires to minimize waste or re-use materials to avoid waste, generating waste is a natural part of business and recycling liquid wastes and hazardous wastes is unlikely to be a straightforward matter. However, where significant quantities of waste are produced, it may make sense to treat the waste at the place of production to minimize off-site disposal costs and to increase the opportunities for recycling. A design and build process can be tailor made to your requirements.

Existing on-site waste treatment processes may have been installed a long time ago or the production wastes have changed causing process bottlenecks, inefficient operation and excessive operating costs. A root and branch design review service would identify the root causes and de-bottleneck the problems.

When faced with an investment decision comparing different competing waste treatment solutions, it can be difficult to compare processes on an apples v apples basis. In some cases, it is necessary to evaluate a High CapEx / Low OpEx process alongside a Low CapEx / High OpEx process. Our technical evaluation service helps to determine the best waste treatment solution.

Oil recovery processes are a good example of the High v Low Capital Expenditure dilemma. The recovery of a fuel oil product from waste oil may be perceived as low risk when compared to the recycling of lubricating oil but it may be more difficult to achieve the End of Waste criteria to a fuel oil specification that has a large market demand. Whether it is necessary to produce dark viscous oil or thin low sulfur ‘white’ oil, we can provide the right technical solution.

Before deciding whether to modify an existing waste treatment plant or build something from scratch, it may be necessary to carry out an audit of the upstream production processes to optimize recycling opportunities at the earliest opportunity. Recycling optimization audits are recommended whenever appropriate.

TESTIMONIALS

Principal, Vincent Brown Associates (Specialist UK and EU Waste & Environment Law Practice)

As a specialist solicitor engaged in all types of regulatory, contractual, advisory, due diligence and litigation work in the fields of waste, pollution and industrial law, I have worked with Chris Williamson many times, and have found his technical and commercial acumen in these areas to be absolutely indispensable. Whether (for example) challenging government actions or framing difficult and highly specialist ‘end of waste’ cases, Chris’ many years of in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience of commercial industrial processes and the critical nitty-gritty of practical chemistry, are in my experience an essential part of a successful legal or regulatory process – no more so than when he drove the technical agenda (and heavily influenced the legal strategy) that won the groundbreaking OSS v Environment Agency end of waste ruling in the Court of Appeal. I unhesitatingly recommend him to lawyers and commercial operators working in this area.

I have known Chris Williamson since 2006 and he has provided environmental & waste advice to CSG on an ongoing basis since 2011. His range of consultancy services are extremely diverse including waste treatment process design & build, project finance models, business plans, joint venture agreements, planning applications, permit applications, appeals, regulatory disputes, commercial dispute resolution, End of Waste applications, quasi legal advice, tied oil schemes, new initiatives etc. I have used most, if not all of these services over the past five years to the benefit of the company so I would highly recommend Chris to any organisation requiring expert environmental support and advice in the waste and industrial sectors.
